My old baby never did satisfy me...he simply didn't have the power and gumption I needed and after months of trying to cajole him, I gave up and decided it was time to find a replacement.
Yeah, he's a Eureka Altima vacuum. If you're in the market for a new vacuum, don't waste your money on one of these. I don't care if some of the reviews (but check the comments to the review!!) are sparkling, this thing is a pain in the butt. It never picked up dirt well and constantly cleaning the filters in an attempt to get it to clean better was a real nightmare. Not only that, the damn thing spits dust and dirt out the back, even after the filters are cleaned and the canister is emptied. It only cost about $80 which is one reason I got it but each and every time I buy a cheap vacuum, I get a cheap vacuum. Funny how that works, huh?
So this morning I'd finally had enough. I went to the local Oreck store and got a new baby! Yeah, she's an Oreck Silver Series vacuum and boy, is she special! I used it as soon as I got home with it and she picked up more dirt and stuff than the Eureka ever even knew existed. The power of this vacuum is simply amazing.
After tax, she cost $432.95 but she's worth every penny and I'd pay that much to replace her. This is my second Oreck and of every vacuum I've owned (and believe me I've owned many in the almost 30 years I've been keeping house), Oreck is the only one that satisfies...and I've even tried the Dyson. Remind me of this if I ever try to buy anything but an Oreck.

I've had terrible experiences with vacuum cleaners. Next time I'm looking, I might think of an Oreck.
Do you have a cat? I know the cat hair is the problem with most of the cheaper vacuum cleaners that I buy. It clogs them up, then they spit dirt like your cheap one did!
I'd be very willing to spend the money, if I knew it could handle the cat hair!
Laurie, Bob (the cat) lives in Austin with my sons now but when I had the other Oreck we had him and a dog or two in the house and they all shed to some degree. The Oreck handled it beautifully! The only thing I had to do was once in awhile remove hair that was wound on the roller. That was easy, though.
By the way, a package of 8 bags for the Oreck is about $28 but you can sometimes find them cheaper on ebay, craigslist, and other places. The bag holds about 4 times what a bagless canister holds so they needn't be changed weekly. I change mine about once a month or less often and that works out fine.
Get an Oreck!

Thanks for the info. I would't mind removing the hair from the roller, it's when the everything else gets plugged up that I can't deal.
I think this is going on my wish list! I'm so tired of spending money on cheap vacuum cleaners that just don't work.
Well, that's what I did for years before getting my first Oreck-I bought cheap vacuums and hated them. They aren't disposable but I ended up pitching them, anyway. Like I said, this is my second Oreck and I won't buy another cheap vacuum. It's not worth the hassle!
