Eat from the pantry challenge

Sara, over at Learning the Frugal Life, has an Eat from the Pantry challenge going on this month. I just learned about it but I'm joining and will plan our meals around what we already have for the rest of this month. Fortunately, the MPM entry for this week already uses things we have so I don't need to switch gears there.

Eating from the pantry is something we try to do on a regular basis. We buy virtually all of our food on sale and buy a good quantity so rotation of foodstuffs is a necessity. Of course, that means that when something is nearing its 'end of life' stage, we consume it! But that also means we don't spend money for food items we already have unless we need to stock up on them.

My goal for the remainder of this month is to buy only milk, eggs, and fresh produce. I don't know that I'll make it since the stockpile mentality causes me to become a whirling dervish when I see certain things on sale but I'll be happy if I just cut waaaaay back on what I buy.

If you'd like to cut your grocery bill, set a goal for what's left of this month and join the challenge!

Thanks for stopping by my blog! I call Eating from the Pantry, our "kids night"! haha. Here's the recipe for Lantham Stew. Its very bland and interesting, but my husband likes it! I dont really know wow. You cant blame me if you make it and hate it! haha.

5 medium potatoes; peeled and diced into small chunks.
1 small onion; diced
I cup dry rice
1 cup dry elbow macaroni
1 can pinto beans with juice
1 pd. Ground beef (thawed and cooked)
1 can diced tomatoes

layer into casserole dish (sprayed with pam); potatoes, onion, rice, macaroni, beans, beef, then tomatoes. Sprinkle salt and some all purpose seasoning on top and cover tightly. Bake at 350 for 90 minutes. Sprinkle more salt and seasoning to taste, before serving.

Great! So glad you are joining us! I think I am going to make this something I try and do every few months. I go a little crazy sometimes when something is on sale and I get so much that I really need to get it gone before buying more! Good luck with the next couple weeks I will be following your progress! Don't forget to link up on Friday and let us know how you did.

Have a great week.

Michelle, thanks for sharing that! I'll try it soon, no doubt!

Sara, I think doing this on a regular basis is a good idea. I'm in. :) Will post about progress on Friday.
